A full, comprehensive and updated directory of Italian ethnographic museums has never been compiled. Nor, among the professionals is there a full consensus on the term ‘ethnographic’ and on how many and which museums deserve this description. Hoping to do something useful and acceptable for both operators and enthusiasts we thought it fitting to select the data reported below, collating museums that have ethnographic collections and documentation in the strict sense, without any claim to absolute reliability and thoroughness. We will be very grateful to all who wish to report errors, omissions and provide updates.
At the head of the list, however, we need to cite at least three important points of reference for the coordination of the sector as a whole:
- National Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions
